Alice Springs Masters Games to make big return in 2024

The next Alice Springs Masters Games (ASMG) will now be held in 2024, with 2023 to play host to a smaller-scale lead up sporting event.

The decision comes following concerns from sporting groups in Alice Springs about their ability to source enough volunteers to stage a full-scale ASMG in 2023, with nearly 90 per cent of sports indicating they would prefer a 2024 ASMG.

In response, the Northern Territory Government, working with the Alice Springs Town Council, has provided in-principle support for a smaller-scale sporting event in 2023, to build up to a better than ever ASMG games in 2024.

The ASMG is an iconic and much-loved event that is a priority for the Territory Labor Government.

It brings a wealth of economic and social opportunities to the region, so it is important that we maintain momentum to 2024 by still having a sporting event in Alice Springs in October 2023.

Northern Territory Major Events Company will continue to work closely with the Alice Springs Town Council and key stakeholders to ensure the successful staging of 2023’s year-out sports festival and a better than ever full-scale ASMG in 2024.

Quotes from Minister for Major Events, Paul Kirby:

“We look forward to putting our focus into making the 2024 Alice Springs Masters Games the best games yet, and in the meantime ensuring we have a great sporting event next October to stimulate the Red Centre.

“This decision has been made in close consultation with the Alice Springs Town Council, stakeholders and the sporting communities who put an enormous amount into this event.

“A minimum number of sports and volunteers are needed for the Alice Springs Masters Games to be a meaningful experience for all concerned, and we are now working on making that happen in 2024.”
