Honouring Her Majesty

How do you honour the incredible life and memory of our late Sovereign, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II?

That is the question Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio would like to ask residents as Council seeks community engagement to consider memorial options for Queen Elizabeth II.

“Aside from the longevity of her service, it was the Queen’s unwavering devotion to duty and her many personal attributes that endeared her to so many people across the spectrum of society that have been fondly recalled in the wake of her death,” Mayor Antonio said.

“She was a constant presence that afforded people a degree of personal familiarity, whether they knew or had met her.

“As such, I think it’s only appropriate for us to consider a fitting way to recognise the late Queen’s extraordinary service, which spanned more than 70 years.

“Initial suggestions to celebrate the reign of the Queen have included a statue in one of our parks, a garden named in the Queen’s honour, a statue of the Queen’s corgis, a memorial in Coronation Park, the planting of English Oak trees and many more.

“To make sure this is a memorial that best represents the sentiments of our community, we would like your feedback, with ideas coming back to a future meeting of Council for consideration.”

Council will advise the community when the consultation period is live. Council anticipates commencing a thorough and purposeful stakeholder and community engagement program in March 2023.
