Police charge woman for Sydney airport assault

A New Zealand woman, 36, is expected to face Sydney Downing Centre Local Court today (24 October 2022) charged with allegedly assaulting a passenger at Sydney Airport.

Police were called to a departure lounge area on Saturday 22 October 2022, after reports the woman had allegedly assaulted a passenger waiting to board a flight from Sydney to Auckland. The offender was unknown to the passenger.

AFP officers arrested the woman and she was taken to Mascot Police Station where she was charged with one count of common assault, contrary to section 61 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW). The maximum penalty for this offence is two years’ imprisonment.

AFP Sydney Airport Police Commander Morgen Blunden said police will not hesitate to prosecute people whose behaviour endangers others in the airport environment.

“Thousands of people are travelling through Sydney Airport every day and we are serious about making sure it remains a safe environment for travellers and employees who work there,” Detective Superintendent Blunden said.

“We will not tolerate this type of allegedly violent and unprovoked behaviour and people should know that we will prosecute them to the full extent of the law if they pose a threat to people’s safety.”
