Liberals’ stadium data doesn’t add up
The Liberal government’s data on its $750 million stadium in Hobart doesn’t add up, leaving even more serious questions about the impact a new stadium would have on Tasmania.
The consultant’s report released for the stadium claims the venue would host 44 major events a year, or roughly one every eight days.
The government told the consulting company that this would include six A-League matches with an average attendance of 11,500, and seven NRL matches with average crowds of 15,000.
Yet, the average attendances for A-League matches in Tasmania last year were less than 1,500 – or nearly 90 per cent less than they’re projecting.
If these are the figures the government is relying on, their case has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese.
These projections clearly show the government is relying on rubbery figures to justify spending $750 million on a stadium, especially with no business case to back up any of their claims.
Labor supports Tasmania’s bid for an AFL/AFLW team but we do not support signing a blank cheque to the AFL to spend taxpayers’ money on a stadium we don’t need in the middle of a health, housing and cost-of-living crisis.
With the government failing to get the basics right in so many key areas, signing up to a $750 million stadium on the basis of dodgy figures makes no sense for Tasmanians or the state.
