New Arrivals for Disney+ December 2022

Disney+ is bringing some nostalgic goodies for subscribers in December 2022, all in time for the holidays. In addition to the Willow legacy series that will be running through its first season this month, audiences will now be able to dive back into the National Treasure franchise. National Treasure: Edge of History is another legacy series that follows a young cast of adventurers while paying homage to the original films – the ideal project that can bridge the gap between old and newer viewers alike. Even though this might not be a direct sequel project like many have been asking for, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that National Treasure 3 is already in early development with original star Nicholas Cage.

Night at the Museum fans will be happy to see the series make a comeback in the form of a new animated Disney+ original film in December 2022 as well. Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again follows Nick Daley, the son of Larry Daley originally portrayed by Ben Stiller, as he becomes the night guard at the Museum of Natural History. Voiced by Joshua Bassett of High School Musical: The Musical fame, Larry will come face to face with an old foe of his father’s, the Egyptian Pharaoh Kahmunrah, originally played by comedian Hank Azaria. Looking for more nostalgia this Christmas? Subscribers can also now enjoy the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated film to hit Disney+, Rodrick Rules. And yes, an animated adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw is confirmed to be coming next too.

Our Recs:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

Rodrick Rules is perhaps the most beloved from the best-selling Diary of a Wimpy Kid novel series. The Disney+ adaptation of the first book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, was released only one year ago. It’s safe to say that fans could be getting new Diary of a Wimpy Kid films roughly every year, as author and screenwriter Jeff Kinney has expressed that he has no plans in stopping any time soon. Rodrick Rules sees the lame Greg Heffley and his best friend Rowley Jefferson entangled in hijinks with his harsh older brother Rodrick after their parents leave them home alone on a vacation for the weekend.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is now streaming on Disney+!

Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again

The next chapter in the Night at the Museum franchise comes in the form of a Disney+ original animated film. Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again shows the son of series protagonist Larry Daley taking up the mantle as the night guard at the Museum of Natural History. Nick Daley, voiced by High School Musical: The Musical star Joshua Bassett will be challenged by Kahmunrah, who was the villain in Battle of the Smithsonian. Ben Stiller is replaced by Zachary Levi in voicing Larry Daley in his now supporting role.

Returning museum exhibit characters include Jedediah the cowboy, Octavius the Roman soldier, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, Attila the Hun, Dexter the monkey, and Sacagawea – all voiced by new actors too. Additionally, Joan of Arc makes her series debut in the film. Atomic Cartoons, known for working on FX’s Little Demon, provided the 2D animation for Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again, technically making it the first 2D-animated film released by Walt Disney Pictures since 2011’s Winnie the Pooh.

Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again premieres on Disney+ December 9, 2022!

National Treasure: Edge of History

National Treasure: Edge of History finds a daring fresh lead in newcomer Lisette Olivera, who plays a 22-year-old named Jess Valenzuela who must travel across the country to unravel her family’s past mysteries. Along with her ragtag group of friends, Jess must race against a wealthy black market antiquity dealer to find a missing treasure that was passed down by her father. The show’s dynamic villain Billie Pearce is played by none other than Catherine Zeta-Jones, who just recently starred as Morticia Adams in Netflix’s hit dark comedy series Wednesday.

Though this isn’t a direct sequel to the films, original star Justin Bartha is reprising his role as the tech specialist Riley Poole. Fans can expect to see Harvey Keitel make another appearance as Agent Peter Sadusky as well. This spin-off’s group of young adult leads will have much learning to do from these franchise regulars, and the door is wide open for more familiar faces to pop in again. While people shouldn’t expect to see Nicholas Cage as Ben Gates again just yet, the cast of the show has been vocal about wanting Cage to appear in Season 2. National Treasure: Edge of History will be 10 episodes long and will have a two-episode premiere.

National Treasure: Edge of History kicks off on Disney+ December 14, 2022!
