National Day of Recognition for Survivors of Sexual Assault and Institutional Abuse

Today is the inaugural National Day of Recognition for Survivors of Sexual Assault and Institutional Abuse.

There is no matter of greater importance than the safety and wellbeing of our children and young people.

Today is a day of recognition of those who have endured the pain, for those who live on as survivors and those who were taken by their suffering.

With humility and responsibility, we recognise the ache in the hearts of those with family members and loved ones lost to such unspeakable tragedy.

To those that live on, enduring the trauma from their past, we stand with you, to work to ensure that this may never happen to anyone again.

Today is a day to commemorate those that have spoken out against their abuse, to shine a light on the darkest places in our community.

For those who have relived their trauma through the Commission of Inquiry, your actions have paved a way forward for the Government to tread, to be accountable, to make sure the mistakes of the past are never again repeated.

What we can do, as parliamentarians, is listen to those involved.

What we can do, as parliamentarians, is set up a system not designed to punish, hide, and destroy the lives of those who are subjected to it, but have one that is safe, that nurtures, that is transparent, that listens, and is accountable.

We welcome Premier Rockliff’s commitment to implementing, in full, the recommendations of the Commission when they are handed down next year, and remain committed to work with the Parliament as a whole to ensure this commitment is upheld.

Thank you, to all survivors for sharing your stories, and guiding society to a place that is safe for everyone.
