More quality housing in Cooma is a step closer with community consultation underway for a residential masterplan fronting onto the Monaro Highway that will provide capacity for hundreds of new homes for the region.

Minister for Planning and Minister for Homes Anthony Roberts said that-underused NSW Government land would be repurposed to provide capacity for around 300 new mixed tenure dwellings across two precincts, with at least 32 reserved for social housing and 8 more for key workers.

“The North Precinct draft masterplan is the first to go on public exhibition as part of a development assessment process, which proposes around 150 future new homes, a community park, a seniors’ living site for around 20 new homes and importantly the right infrastructure to support the development,” Mr Roberts said.

“Delivery against these plans will help to ease housing shortages, boost the local economy and provide local job opportunities, and offer more people in need a place to call home.”

Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said a statewide Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Crown Lands and the NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) late last year to support the delivery of more housing on government-owned land.

“Delivering more affordable housing is a NSW Government priority and unlocking more Crown land will ensure more properties can be built to benefit NSW residents, particularly in regional areas,” Mr Anderson said.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Franklin said that land had also been transferred to Merrimans Local Aboriginal Land Council, to deliver housing and create economic benefits for the local Aboriginal community.

“It’s important that the Aboriginal community and government work together to create better outcomes for regional NSW, including boosting housing supply in Cooma.”

“As part of the collaborative effort, LAHC has worked closely with Crown Lands and Merrimans to prepare a second development application for another 150 dwellings sites, which is on track for lodgement with Council this month”.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Narelle Davis said that council welcomed the plans for more social and affordable housing in the region.

“This is a significant opportunity to help shape the future of Cooma and we encourage the community to have their say on the masterplan to ensure their views are heard,” Ms Davis said.

The draft Masterplan of Cooma North Precinct is on exhibition until 6 November 2022.
