More than 130 local businesses have benefited from Nyrstar’s Local Business Priority Program over the past 12 months.

At the end of Nyrstar’s financial year on 30 September, Nyrstar’s procurement spend in the region was more than $104 million, representing a 73% increase since the Program was launched in 2019.

Nyrstar Australia Vice President, Dale Webb, said Nyrstar was focussed on ensuring the local economy benefited from the important work we do every year at Nyrstar.

“Increasing our local procurement spend is a crucial priority for our operations and it has been exciting to see our Local Business Priority Program continue to grow,” said Mr Webb.

“Nyrstar is proud to spend locally and committed in its support of hard-working, home-grown businesses and people.

“We have so many longstanding relationships and our local suppliers have built up detailed knowledge of our site. Each are valued business partners and critical to the ongoing success of our operations.”

One of these partners is Lynch and Saracino Concreting, a locally owned business that has operated out of Port Pirie since 2010. They are one of several local businesses currently at the Nyrstar site completing maintenance work as part of its 55-day planned turnaround.

Business Co-Owner, Ryan Saracino, said that as a direct benefit from their work with Nyrstar, Lynch and Saracino Concreting had put on two new casual employees and engaged more local contractors.

“Being a local Port Pirie business has meant we can be flexible and responsive in our partnership with Nyrstar which has been a great advantage,” said Mr Saracino.

“Employing two new workers as a result of the business we’ve received from Nyrstar is a great benefit to those individuals to grow their careers, to support their families and the local economy.”

Nyrstar Port Pirie’s local spend is defined as being with businesses who operate from within the local government areas of the Port Pirie Regional Council, the District Council of Mount Remarkable, and the Northern Areas Council.
