Launch of Consular State of Play 2021-22

Today I will launch DFAT’s Consular State of Play 2021-22. This publication is a snapshot of consular services provided to Australians overseas during the past financial year.

Last financial year there were more than 34,700 consular assistance and crisis support cases. The State of Play tells the story of what happened when things didn’t go to plan.

From whereabouts inquiries to arrests, missing passports and hospitalisations, consular cases can vary in complexity and in the support the government can provide overseas.

The case studies and statistics in this publication show how consular officials, in Canberra and around the world, stepped in to assist Australians and their families overseas, including in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other international crises.

Together with the Insurance Council of Australia, we reiterate that travel insurance is just as important as a passport.

A co-commissioned survey found 95% of travellers plan to take out insurance. However, more than two thirds of respondents believed the Australian government would help provide medical treatment if they needed it.

DFAT will continue to be resourced to provide consular assistance for Australians in difficulty overseas.

And as we take to the skies again I ask all Australians looking to travel to do what they can to prepare themselves, and to understand the limits of the support we can provide abroad.

For Australians preparing to travel, no matter who you are or where you want to go, check and act on the latest travel advice from Smartraveller, and subscribe for updates.
