WWF Statement on Nature-Based Solutions Roadmap

Today at COP27, the Biden-Harris Administration released the Nature-Based Solutions Roadmap, an outline of strategic recommendations to put America on a path that will unlock the full potential of nature-based solutions to address climate change, nature loss, and inequity. This marks the first time the US has developed a strategy to scale up nature-based solutions.

In response, WWF issued the following statement from Marcene Mitchell, senior vice president, climate change:

“Today’s announcement affirms the critical role that the conservation of nature plays in fighting climate change, and the fact that these issues are two sides of the same coin.

“WWF’s recent Living Planet Report documents the speed and scale of global nature loss and the existential threat this poses. We also know that without the power of nature-based solutions, our climate goals will be out of reach, which is why this Roadmap from the Administration is so welcome and needed.

“In his Earth Day Executive Order, President Biden recognized the intertwined nature of these challenges and the opportunities to address them together, directing his Administration to identify and mobilize high-quality nature-based solutions. Coming in the opening days of COP27, this announcement reminds negotiators that we need to achieve a future that is both net-zero and ‘nature positive’. WWF looks forward to working with the Administration to realize the full potential of the roadmap it has laid out.”
