Tesla is growing again, but there’s little comfort for the industry. The $760 billion electric-vehicle manufacturer produced nearly 366,000 cars in the third quarter, a 41% increase from the previous three-month stretch that also reversed a first-half slump. The number of cars it delivered to customers, however, fell 5% short of what analysts were expecting, which the company attributed to shipping woes. Tesla shares tumbled 8% on Monday.

Breakingviews – Debt ceiling debacle is ultimate winner’s curse
Breakingviews - Debt ceiling debacle is ultimate winner’s curse,How could the United States sail so close to defaulting on its debts? There’s an easy answer: political dysfunction and financial recklessness. With just over a week to go until the world’s biggest economy potentially runs out of money to pay its bills, Republicans and Democrats were still unable on Monday to see eye to eye on a solution. But there’s another explanation too. The ongoing debt-ceiling standoff, which has the potential to tip markets into mayhem, is a kind of winner’s curse. Its root causes are the same things that put Uncle Sam on top in the first place. Tags: Breakingviews DEBTBREAKINGVIEWS Reuters reuters.com USA -

Breakingviews - Revolut-SoftBank fight exposes VC share artifice,Revolut has hit yet another snag on its journey to revolutionise the financial sector. The startup may only win a UK banking licence if it gets rid of preference shares held by investors including Japan’s SoftBank Group . It could turn out to be a solvable problem for founder Nik Storonsky, but the fracas shows that a rampant form of financial engineering in startup land also comes with downsides. A European Union privacy regulator charged the $630 billion social media giant a record fine over its transfer of Facebook user data from Europe to servers in its home country, the United States. The $1.3 billion fine is a drop in the bucket for Meta, which has over $40 billion in its cash coffers. Breakingviews - How risky bank debt makes customers safer,Bank watchdogs are mulling changes to deposit insurance schemes after a string of lenders failed. Yet one of the most promising fixes has little to do with insurance, or even deposits. Forcing more U.S. banks to fund more of their loans and investments by issuing long-term debt, and relatively less with deposits, could offer an extra layer of protection for customers. The only question is who shoulders the cost of the extra safety. Tags: BANKSBREAKINGVIEWS Breakingviews global Reuters reuters.com -

Breakingviews – Mediobanca dips toe into tech M&A shark tank
Breakingviews - Mediobanca dips toe into tech M&A shark tank,Italy’s best-known investment bank is pushing out of its comfort zone. Mediobanca , the 8.5-billion-euro financial group run by veteran CEO Alberto Nagel, said on Thursday it had agreed to buy London-based Arma Partners, an advisory boutique that specializes in technology deals. The acquisition’s financial details have not been disclosed. But it easily ranks as Mediobanca’s biggest buy in the segment. The bank’s latest advisory deal of notice, the acquisition of the French boutique formerly known as Messier Maris & Associes in 2019, was meant to boost Mediobanca’s aggregate fees by 8%, the buyer said at the time. With revenue in excess of $100 million, or about 90 million euros, Arma should add more than 10% to Mediobanca’s annual net fees and commission of 850 million euros. The French boutique’s contribution, although a record, stood at 63 million euros in the financial year that ended in June 2022. Tags: Breakingviews FINANCEBREAKINGVIEWS global Reuters reuters.com -

Breakingviews - Debt-ceiling talks are more theater than substance,It’s crunch time on Capitol Hill. U.S. President Joe Biden will meet with congressional leaders including House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday to attempt to make progress on talks to raise the debt ceiling. The few areas of possible agreement cover sensitive political topics including oil permitting and food stamps. Yet a compromise on those barely puts a dent in the government’s budget shortfall.
